Vietnam & Japan strengthen defense co-operation
At the beginning of March, Vietnam’s deputy defense minister, Phan Van Giang, visited Japan as part of a two-country trip that also included Singapore. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the on-going activity in the Japan-Vietnam defense relationship, which both sides look to continue to develop into 2019 as well.
Minister Giang met with Japanese officials including Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya. They discussed several issues including the implementation of the latest joint vision statement on Vietnam-Japan defense relations adopted last year, future undertakings for the defense relationship, and regional and global issues of mutual interest. Vietnam recently played host to the Hanoi summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.Minister Giang also visited the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force’s Kisarazu Camp and also held talks with Vietnamese embassy staff in Japan.
